I have been thinking about making a quilt for a while now as I have seen some lovely designs around. So a couple of weeks ago I bought some fat quarter fabric bundles and found an old white sheet in the back of my cupboard and got started. I am surprised at how easy it is. Once you have got all your squares cut out it is just a case of sewing them together, right side to right side, and then ironing down the seam on the back to keep it neat. I have finished sewing all the squares together and although they don’t match up perfectly I am really pleased with it.

All I need to do know is add a border using my white sheet, sandwich some wadding in between the front and back and sew it all together. I have a feeling that putting the edging on to finish it off is going to be the hard bit, so if anyone knows of any tricks please let me know.
I will upload photos of the finished article when it is complete
I am attending the Festival of Quilts show in Birmingham (20th – 23rd August) this year, which I am really looking forward to. I can see myself getting addicted to making quilts and will probably end up spending a fortune on material – there are too many gorgeous fabrics around at the moment. I especially like Amy Butler designs.

I was scared to try quilting too, but having started acouple of years ago have never looked back, and have enjoyed every minute. You will meet some very lovely and talented ladies always willing to help a beginner.

Hi CraftyB I can highly recommend investing in a sewing machine. You can get some great deals on them lately and you'll find that you will use it for all sorts of projects and repairing clothes. If you want to try something small by hand first a great book called Sew Fabulous Fabric (search for code 003946) is a great choice and if you want a sewing bible then The Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing (search for code 004166) is a book you will refer to time and time again. Hope that helps. Let us know how you get on. Marie :)

I would love to try quilting but am a bit scared about the investment in a machine, fabric and time. Would you know any simple projects that I could try ... perhaps by hand first? Thanks
