A fur-like effect can be created in crochet by working lots of loops of yarn on a double crochet base. The fur, or loop, stitches leave a loop of yarn sitting on the back of the work, so they are usually worked on wrong-side rows.
Making the fur stitch
As a fur stitch is a variation of double crochet, start with a base of double crochet stitches.
Fur Stitch Stage 1
1. To make a fur stitch, insert the hook into the work. Wrap the yarn around the first finger of your left hand and draw this loop out to the required length – your pattern will tell you how long this should be. Pick up both of the strands of this loop with the crochet hook.
Fur Stitch Stage 2
2. Draw both of these strands through the work. There are now 3 loops on the hook. Take the yarn over the hook again, as you would for any double crochet stitch.
Fur Stitch Stage 3
3. Draw this new loop of yarn through all 3 loops on the hook to complete the stitch, leaving the loop of yarn on the back of the work. If the fur stitches are worked correctly, the loops on the back of the work will be quite secure. However, you may wish to gently tug on them to neaten up both them and the stitch.
