Working French Knots
Tips from the Experts: Cross Stitch
Working French Knots
The use of this stitch will be indicated on your chart by a circle or knot shape, usually coloured. Work French knots with one strand of thread. For larger knots try using two strands or try a thicker needle. Too many twists around the needle will not produce a satisfactory round knot, so experiment beforehand to get the effect you want. To sew a French knot, bring the needle out one thread to the right of where you want the knot to lie (Fig 15). Depending on the size of the knot you require, slip the needle once or twice under the thread so that the twists lie snugly around the needle. Without allowing the thread to untwist, insert the needle back into the fabric one thread to the left of where you started (or part of an Aida block) and pull the thread through to the back. If you do not work the knot with one thread to support it, you risk the knot sinking into the hole and getting lost on the back of the work.
